The Seventh U.S. Infantry was organized under the act of Congress approved July 16, 1798, with William Bentley as Lieutenant Colonel Commandant. Army officer; in command of the San Carlos Indian Reservation in Arizona from 1879 to 1880. In 1882, he led the army in the Battle of Big Dry Wash. He was stationed at Fort McDowell and Fort Huachuca and took part in the Geronimo Campaign of 1885-1886. He was Inspector General of the Department of Arizona from 1890 to 1893.
